Streets, density, and the superblock: neighborhood planning units and street connectivity in Abu Dhabi

Our new article on street connectivity of Abu Dhabi, UAE.  In this article, we use Pedestrian Route Directness (PRD) combined with Betweenness to classify streets into principal and secondary streets. We found that plot density does not affect street efficiency. Second, the efficiency of the network is strongly affected by its layout. A well-connected street network is an asset to efficiency. The gridiron network is a perfect layout in terms of efficiency. The orientation of the network to the NPU’s edges can positively or negatively affect efficiency. The more evenly principal streets are distributed throughout an NPU, the more efficient its network is. Secondary roads can contribute significantly to the efficiency of the network. Well-connected secondary streets significantly enhance efficiency.
