I know, anecdotally, that in an economic downturn it is often a time when professionals make lemonade out of lemons, and pursue that ambition (whether long delayed or the "next big step") to go deeper into their topic, and find a new way to serve. By this I mean, quite seriously, potential students from 25 to 65 and beyond.
For various reasons this is a good time to consider UBC. There are three main reasons why.
1. The
2 If your interest is in climate change there is a source of funding that can provide a living wage, called the pacific institute for climate change. http://www.pics.uvic.ca/ Check it out.
3. There is an ambitious undertaking just getting under way to use the PhD mechanism as a means to form creative teams of collaborators. Urban sustainability and sustainability generally will certainly be a focus. There is a separate source of substantial funding for this endeavor.
For number two and three there is a possibility of grants that total a living wage for you (and your family if you have one).
While no guarantees can be provided, its a pretty exciting set of prospects. In order to qualify for consideration for number two and number three you have to get an application in. January 15 is the deadline so its not a lot of time. Again i apologize for the short notice. As for me personally I make this invitation "off the side of my desk" quite beyond what i have time for. However our design center and Landscape Architecture program provides a potential home for activities. The UBC School of Community and Regional Planning does too. I can direct you to potential collaborators and committee members.
I would personally enjoy working with a creative team of the right PhD students who come from engineering, finance, development, architecture, sociology, policy studies, architecture, and landscape architecture. For me it would have to provide the possibility of making real change in the real world to make it relevant. Again,
Generally there are a few avenues for PhD work, but the most obvious is "interdisciplinary studies" which is more self directed than most others. Check it out at: http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/phd-interdisciplinary-studies
